National Red Wine Day – August 28

As the days start to get shorter and the wine harvest is approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a great time to rediscover the glories of red wine, and that’s why this auspicious holiday was created!

OK, a large part of today is an excuse to kick back and enjoy a glass (or two) of red wine, but if you get those “It’s not wine o’clock already?” looks, then take comfort in the fact red wine is much more than just a relaxing drink with cheese.

It contains antioxidant polyphenols that are also found in other dark fruits and vegetables. These antioxidants are responsible for the red wine’s ability to protect the heart, improve the health of blood vessels, and reduce inflammation and risk for certain cancers including colon cancer.

Red wine makes it easier to digest different foods due to its tannins which are responsible for reducing acid levels in the stomach and small intestine.

Red wine is made from dark-colored grapes and gets its color and much of its flavor from contact with the skins.

The actual color of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines. The juice from most purple grapes is greenish-white, the red color coming from anthocyanin pigments present in the skin of the grape; exceptions are the relatively uncommon teinturier varieties, which produce a red-colored juice. Much of the redwine production process, therefore, involves extraction of color and flavor components from the grape skin. It is a delicacy around the world.

We have a great selection of red wines from all over the world;  made from grapes familiar and exotic; conventionally, sustainably, and organically farmed.
