El Nido Clio 2019

Bodegas El Nido project is the result of the collaboration of the Gil Family and famed Aussie winemaker Chris Ringland.

Dark cherry red. Intense nose of ripe fruits (cassis) and confit fruit mixed with sensations of toasted coffee and licorice which brings finesse and elegance. Strength, flesh, savory and opulence combine on the palate of this wine that develops in bottle.   A consistently great wine. Made from a  blend of old vine Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon that was barrel-aged for 22-26 months in French and American oak, this is an opulent red with bold aromas and flavors, a thick, dense palate, and a long finish. A powerful, decadent wine.

The winery is located in the Valle de La Aragona, inside the Murcia district of Jumilla and surrounding area. Monastrell vines are planted in a foot deep layer of chalky stones over substrata of sandy soil. Cabernet vines are planted in vineyards with chalky, stony soil over a layer of sandy soil with clay. The grapes for this wine are made from 30 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and 79 acres of very old Monastrell (Mourvèdre, with a very low yield. The grapes are harvested with small baskets to prevent bruising. The bunches are brought to triage tables where the best ones are selected. It spends 24 months in French and American new oak barrels where it gains complexity and length.

2018 vintage review:  93 points by Josh Raynolds (Vinous): “Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed black and blue fruits, vanilla, and a suave floral nuance on the spice-accented nose. Smooth and appealingly sweet on entry and then tighter in the midpalate, offering concentrated cherry cola, black currant, and exotic spice flavors and a hint of dark chocolate. Dusty tannins add shape to a very long, dark-fruit-dominated finish that strongly echoes the floral note. Drink: 2023-2031.”
