This week's selection : Plo du Maorou 2009 Vin de Pays de Hautrive, a Syrah, Carignan Grenache blend that's perfect with braises and stews, cheeses and roasts.
In 2006, the Château la Baronne, along with Jackson Family Wines in California, purchased a 20-ha parcel of vines called Plo de Maorou. It's a dramatic location, situated high on a plateau that offers views of the Pyrenees Mountains to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea that is only 40 km away to the south.
Hiring superstar winemaking consultant Stefano Chioccioli, and converting the vineyards to organic (certified) and biodynamic (practicing) farming methods.
The grapes are rigorously sorted, and after a short cold soak, fermented naturally with native yeasts with no sulfites or other additives, separated by plot and varietal in large stainless fermenters or vertical Slavonian casks.
The wines are aged on lees in cement, large casks ans stainless, left to settle for several months, blended and then bottled without fining or filtration
The Plo de Maorou vineyard is a high elevation and windswept site of old vines and rock strewn soil. The Maorou soil is a 50 meter thick alternation of sandstones, gray and red clay and oyster fossil at the deepest level.
The result is a full bodied red, with a Mediterranean bouquet of wild herbs and flower - gobs of red and black fruit, coating the palate, but well-balanced,that - at this price - makes a great, classy host or hostess gift!
