93 Point Italian Merlot

This week's selection : Marchese diGresy Monferrato Rosso 2006, a balanced and well-made Merlot from Italy's Piedmont region.
Farmstead has been carrying wines from the Marchese for quite a while (Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Barbera and Langhe Rosso), so I was quite excited to taste his 100% Merlot bottling from the commune of Cassine.
Wow - bing cherries, dark plums, dark chocolate notes jumping from the glass, coupled with a very long, satisfying finish. I surmised that this was a $40+ prestige Merlot. But when I heard the price, I snatched up all I could!
Robert Parker: "I admire this producer's wines, which are among the most elegant and graceful wines of Piedmont... they offer hedonistic levels of ripe, rich fruit in a supple, early to mature style with no rough edges."
Gambero Rosso (#1 Wine Magazine in Italy):"The historic estate well deserves its acclaim for the never failing quality of its wines."
93 points, Independent Wine Review (UK) "Marchesi di Gresy is one of Piedmont's top wineries and this recently released Marchesi di Gresy Monferrato Rosso might not be as traditional as some of the winery's other well known wines, but it is just as good. 100% Merlot and matured for 30 months in French oak barriques before it was bottled."
"A fairly intense ruby color in the glass, expressive on the nose, and now complex and ready to drink when tasted. Damson and red cherry fruit notes from the nose are joined by richer dark cherry and licorice flavors on the palate that last for an age. Subtle anise spice and dark chocolate notes lend further nuance as the wine evolves on the tongue. Mellow tannins and a lithe acidity make for a fine wine that is thoroughly drinkable now, although one that could also be cellared for another five years too."
Perfect for a dinner party, host/hostess gift, or as the perfect accompaniment to stews, roasts, braises and cheeses.
We have a limited amount of this wine, and when it's gone, it's gone! At $16.20 per bottle by the case, I'd snatch up a case or three, as this wine will bring you drinking pleasure over the next five years!
